The Know-Hows of Spa Etiquette

If you are one of the thousands that received a gift certificate over the holidays for a luxurious massage consider yourself one of the lucky ones! Nothing is better than allowing yourself the time to rest and relax while someone takes out all the aches and pains. But, if you are one that has never received a massage before there may be some anxiety that you are suffering from. Questions like, “What do you mean I have to get naked?”, “What gratuity, if any, do I leave?”, “Will I be able to allow myself to disconnect from the world?” all roam through your mind. You are not alone; many eons ago I too had the same thoughts. Below you will find some basic info on how to allow yourself some me time, what you should expect, and how to deal with different situations.

Disconnect from the World

First and foremost, DISCONNECT! Turn off your cell phone. If you are checking emails, answering calls or texting you are not allowing yourself to enjoy the moment. Same rules apply to any appointment you may be having at a salon and spa. Bring in a magazine or book to keep yourself occupied if you feel the need.

In the Knick of Time

Be sure to arrive 10-15 minutes prior to your appointment. We suggest this for a few reasons. Reason number one – you will need to fill out some light paperwork to inform the massage therapist of your needs, aches, pains, etc. And reason two – you can give yourself a moment to relax before entering the spa. If run in, have to be quickly taken to the back, then to have your treatment started before calming down, chances are you will not be able to release those emotions during your session.

Let Your Thoughts be Heard

If you have a preference to male or female be sure to notify the reception of this while booking your appointment. At Tranquility we have an all-female staff of massage therapists. Also, during your massage, if you feel the pressure is to light or too deep, if you are too cold, if you would like the music quieter, etc. please inform the therapist. It is our number one goal to ensure that you have the best service possible.

Nudity Control

I know that this was my number one concern about getting a massage. Most massages are done nude, but rest assured, the only part of your body that is exposed during your massage is the part of the body that is being worked on all other parts are covered by a sheet. All therapists are trained in the proper techniques of draping. If you don’t want to be completely nude, you are able to keep your underwear on.

Gratuity Control

If there is not one question that we are asked most, it always relates to gratuity. Typically, most clients leave anywhere from 15-20% gratuity. If you were given a gift certificate please be sure to ask the reception if the tip was included. The ladies will be more than happy to assist you with the value of your card.

Cancellation Policy

We at Tranquility realize that sometimes life can get in the way and sometimes you will need to reschedule your much needed R&R, but please keep in mind that we do ask that you give a 24-hour notice of cancellation. And again, we emphasize that life does happen and we don’t always get a notice at all, but if you do realize that you will need to reschedule, please do so with as much notice as possible.

We do hope that this information was helpful to those new to the spa experience and we can’t wait to see you and help with your much needed rest and relaxation! Until next time…
